HAÏTI (QUÉBEC)
Tahani Rached, 1985, 59 min.

Ayiti From Quebec and New York: A Lineage of Film and Discussion through a Marxist Lens is a teach-in/film screening and coat drive. We will kick off with a teach-in led by the independent Haitian scholar Jafrikayiti (Jean Elissaint Saint-Vil) who is based in Ottawa, Canada. His research centers Haiti’s role in implementing sustainable environmental protection protocols for Haiti’s mineral resources. After Sain-Vil’s lecture there will be a film screening of HAÏTI (QUÉBEC), a documentary following the lives of recent Haitian migrants who have been displaced due to the political uproar in Haiti in the 80s. The film speaks about themes of longing for home, and racism Haitians endure while living in Quebec. After the film screening there will be a Q&A discussion moderated by Danialie Fertile, a member of Rasanbleman Pou Ayiti. The theme of the public program is to educate individuals about what is occurring in Haiti and how Canada and America play a pivotal role in funding the colonial violence that is occurring in Haiti.

The event serves as more than just a political and educational resource. There will be a coat drive in collaboration with Families For Freedom an organization led by Black Women, the organization has supported, educated, advocated and campaigned for families directly affected by mass incarceration and deportation systems.

The event is free and open to the public and is hosted under Caribbean Archive and Rasanbleman Pou Ayiti in collaboration with the Maysles Documentary Center.
